ISO 56002: Managing Innovation as a Sustainable Industrial Lever

At the end of 2025, Ametra undertook an audit in the form of a diagnostic assessment based on the ISO 56002:2019 standard to evaluate the maturity of its innovation management system.

This diagnostic assessment analyzes how an organization structures, manages, and deploys innovation over time.

This non-certifying audit provides a framework of recommendations for adopting best practices in innovation, as well as a guide for pursuing ISO 56001:2019 certification, the innovation management standard.

The primary objective of this approach is to establish a reading and management tool: to gain perspective on existing practices, objectify current processes, and share a common framework to support innovation over time.

Conducted by the consulting firm Ayming, the diagnostic assessment revealed an overall alignment rate of 71% with the ISO 56002 standard, along with recommendations and an action plan.

A High Score for an Initial Assessment

This result represents a significant level of maturity, particularly for a first evaluation against this framework. It reflects the existence of already solid foundations in how innovation is managed and structured within Ametra.

The diagnostic assessment notably highlights strong management commitment to innovation topics, as well as established practices to support and conduct innovative projects. The dimensions related to support and operations demonstrate an organization capable of mobilizing the necessary competencies and articulating R&D with the company’s activities.

On this basis, the innovation management system is qualified as mature and well-structured, in accordance with the recommendations of the ISO 56002 standard. The score is not presented as an end in itself, but as an initial benchmark, enabling the positioning of existing practices and informing long-term management considerations.

Ametra Research, Core of the R&D Dynamic

This level of maturity is part of the continuity of an R&D organization already in place for several years, led by Ametra Research, the group’s R&D and innovation unit.

Established in 2019, Ametra Research relies on a team of PhDs specialized in mechanics, numerical simulation, and CFD.

Its approach is structured around a clear sequence: exploration of needs and opportunities, experimentation, and then valorization of the work conducted.

R&D is conceived as a complement to operational activities, with a dual ambition: to advance the company’s technical expertise and prepare its dissemination to business units.

This approach notably enables the development of future technical experts, who subsequently join operational entities.

Research Topics Anchored in Industrial Challenges

The work conducted within Ametra Research covers advanced R&D topics such as metamaterials, material fracture modeling, electrification of aerospace systems, hydrogen, and the integration of artificial intelligence in calculation and simulation activities.

Metamaterials represent an emblematic example in this regard. The work focuses on bio-inspired architected structures capable of combining weight reduction, vibration absorption, and thermal dissipation, with potential applications in demanding sectors such as aerospace, defense, energy, and nuclear.

This research results in technical presentations, exchanges within specialized industrial circles, and academic collaborations, notably with Centrale Lille and Polytech Lille, to compare simulation results with experimental testing.

From Upstream Research to Industrial Positioning

This R&D activity directly contributes to Ametra’s positioning with its industrial clients. The work from Ametra Research has notably strengthened the company’s technical credibility in the continuity of projects such as Helios, the more electric aircraft, and supported positioning with stakeholders such as Safran.

It also informs discussions for collaborations with technology startups, such as AM3L, specialized in additive manufacturing of metamaterials, in a logic of complementarity between numerical simulation and manufacturing.

Innovation is thus not approached as an isolated exercise, but as a lever for industrial credibility, capable of informing technical choices, anticipating future needs, and supporting commercial initiatives on high-value-added topics.

Structuring the Transition from R&D to Industrialization

In this context, the analysis of the diagnostic results (based on ISO 56002) provides a structuring framework and practices to manage the continuum between research, innovation, and value creation. It enables the formalization of existing practices, the sharing of a common framework, and the inscription of the innovation approach within a clear trajectory.

The challenge is not only to produce scientific or technical results, but to better capitalize on the work conducted, facilitate its internal dissemination, and more systematically prepare its transformation into projects, services, or industrial offerings.

The diagnostic assessment thus represents a valuable tool for evaluating our innovation performance and identifying the optimization pathways necessary for sustainable innovation aligned with Ametra’s strategy and challenges.

A Benchmark for Managing Innovation Over Time

With an alignment rate of 71% from this initial assessment, Ametra establishes a clear reference point for managing its innovation approach. This benchmark confirms already solid foundations, objectifies areas for improvement, and inscribes R&D within a structured, clear, and evolving dynamic.
